The serving chart stays inch-based. Metric labels are practical equivalents only.

This is guidance only. It does not change formulas automatically.

Check cake servings

Use only supported chart sizes. Generous Dessert is calculated geometrically and marked approximate.

Tiered cake planner

Add tiers manually. Each tier can be round or square, and saved tiers can be excluded from served portions.

Your Serving Summary

Serving counts are planning estimates, not guarantees. Actual yield depends on cutting, cake height, filling, frosting and construction.

How are servings estimated?

Last reviewed: October 2026

Methodology

Party and Wedding/Event round and square servings use the approved published serving-chart convention embedded in this tool. Weight mode uses the grams-per-person value selected by the user. Generous Dessert dimension servings are approximate geometric estimates based on a 2 x 2 inch portion. Actual yield depends on cutting and cake construction.

Size-based estimates assume a standard celebration cake approximately 3-6 inches high. Very short cakes may yield fewer servings. There is no height multiplier in S3 v1.

Cake size and cake weight are not converted into each other. Height, density, fillings, frosting, fondant and decoration make that conversion unreliable.

Example 2 - 8-inch round cake

Example 3 - Cake for 50 guests

Party vs wedding cake servings

Party portions are usually larger celebration slices. Wedding/Event portions are smaller and work better when the cake is served after a meal or alongside other desserts.

Cake serving notes

How many people does 1 kg cake serve?

Use weight mode. With the built-in presets, 1 kg gives about 13 light servings at 75 g, 10 standard servings at 100 g, or 8 generous servings at 125 g.

Why do cake-serving charts disagree?

Charts use different slice sizes, cake heights and cutting assumptions. This tool uses one fixed chart for standard round and square sizes so the result is consistent.

How much cake do I need per person?

For weight planning, choose 75 g for lighter portions, 100 g for a standard dessert portion, or 125 g for a generous dessert portion. You can also enter a custom grams-per-person value.

Round vs square cake servings

Square cakes often serve more people at the same nominal size because they have more usable area and are easier to cut into grid portions.

How to calculate servings for a tiered cake

Add the serving count for each included tier. If the top tier is saved, keep it in the planner but exclude it from served portions.

Why cake size and cake weight are not the same thing

An 8-inch cake can weigh very different amounts depending on height, density, filling, frosting and decoration. This tool keeps dimension planning and weight planning separate.

How much cake for 20 people?

At 100 g per person, 20 guests need 2.0 kg exactly and a practical rounded-up quantity of 2.0 kg. In size mode, choose a chart option that reaches at least 20 servings.

How much cake for 30 people?

At 100 g per person, 30 guests need 3.0 kg exactly. In party-size chart planning, a 12-inch round is the smallest supported round cake that reaches at least 30 party servings.

How much cake for 50 people?

At 100 g per person, 50 guests need 5.0 kg exactly. Guest mode can also suggest tiered options that meet or exceed 50 chart servings.

FAQ

How many people does a 1 kg cake serve?

Using the weight mode, a 1 kg cake gives about 13 full light servings at 75 g per person, 10 standard servings at 100 g per person, or 8 generous servings at 125 g per person.

How much cake do I need for 20 people?

At 100 g per person, 20 guests need an exact planning estimate of 2.0 kg, so the practical rounded-up quantity is 2.0 kg. Size-chart options depend on shape and portion style.

How much cake do I need for 30 people?

At 100 g per person, 30 guests need an exact planning estimate of 3.0 kg and a practical cake quantity of 3.0 kg. For party portions, the chart recommends the smallest supported size or tier stack that reaches at least 30 servings.

How much cake do I need for 50 people?

At 100 g per person, 50 guests need an exact planning estimate of 5.0 kg. For size-chart planning, use guest mode to compare single-cake and tiered options that meet or exceed 50 servings.

How many servings are in an 8-inch cake?

In this calculator, an 8-inch round cake estimates about 20 party servings, 24 wedding/event servings, or about 12 generous dessert servings.

What is the difference between party and wedding servings?

Party servings use a larger approximate slice convention of 1.5 x 2 inches. Wedding or event servings use a smaller approximate slice convention of 1 x 2 inches.

Do square cakes serve more people than round cakes?

Often yes at the same nominal size, because square cakes have more usable area and the approved serving chart gives higher counts for several square sizes.

How do tiered cake servings work?

Tiered serving totals are the sum of each included tier's servings for the selected portion style. A saved or excluded tier stays visible but contributes 0 served portions.

How much cake should I allow per person?

Weight mode offers 75 g light, 100 g standard and 125 g generous portions. Choose the portion size explicitly; the calculator does not add a hidden buffer.

Why can't cake weight be converted directly to cake diameter?

Cake weight and cake diameter depend on height, sponge density, layers, fillings, frosting, fondant and decoration, so this calculator keeps size-based and weight-based planning separate.

Know the size you need? Price the cake.

Once you know the likely size or servings, estimate ingredients, decorations, packaging, labour and target margin.
